MY CURRENT INFORMATION SYSTEM EXPERIENCE

In September 2009 I made the bold step of going back to school. Information System is an important part of everyday school-life. The computer is used for teaching, and completion of assignments among other things. In fact I have used the Sheridan database to complete several projects. I feel that very soon most of the student learning processes will be done on-line or by "distance learning".

Of course, that will not be the ideal situation because I think that our professors and teachers have a lot of experience and knowledge and not everyting can be imparted through the computer.

From my experience most of knowledge you retain from your school years are the facts given by your teachers; this is why I take cognizance of all lectures.

MIS AND MY CAREER

In 2006 I was working at The Source by Circuit City, Information Systems was an integral part of day to day operations i.e. Data Processing, Inventory Procedures and Customer Purchasing Transactions.

After a few months I was promoted to General Manager and used IS to prepare weekly salary statements, schedules and reports. Inventory was quick work when using a scanner.

The Company's IS was an invaluable resource, within seconds you could find out all the necessary information of a product at your finger tips. Most of the training modules were accessable on-line.

In my view IS has revolutionized the the retail environment. Purchasing, counter sales, and payment procedures no longer need skilled labour.

REFLECTION ON MY FIRST USE OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS

In 1993 I purchased my first Personal Computer when Information Systems were relatively new to Trinidad. The entire family was excited especially my two daughters who were still in high-school.

After initial set-up I spent an hour with the technician to learn how to use the hardware and software. Having never been exposed to computers I was able to quickly grasp this new technology where dial-up was considered advanced and the internet was a phenomenon.
